Can’t we even spell the word ”cycle” right...
Some might wonder about the story behind our name: Cikkel Copenhagen.
Cikkel [sigəl] is inspired by the old way of pronouncing bicycle in Danish. The word bicycle is from around 1860 when the bicycle was invented. The word comes from latin & old Greek. Bi means two and cycle refers to “circle/wheel”. Yes, it makes totally sense.
When the word hit the Danish language, it was transformed into the Danish word Cykel(bicycle). But the pronunciation was still as you would say it in english (bi)-cycle.
Now a days the common way is to say [Sygəl] though you can be lucky to hear the old way of pronouncing Cykel from the older generations.
So as you see, our name is a gesture to the history and impact of the bi-cycle on people and society.
Copenhagen: Best bike city in the world
There are two reasons for us using Copenhagen in our name.
One is simply because our brand is born in Copenhagen.
The other is the fact that we want to celebrate Copenhagen as the world´s best biking city.
A few facts:
Copenhagen has a population of only around 1,3 mio citizens, but more than 672.000 bikes!
There are more bikes than cars driving through the inner city and Copenhagen has more than 383 kilometers of bike lanes.
