Known as ”The Cannibal” Eddy Merckx broke the hour in 1972 riding 49,431 km on a classic geometry bike. The bike only weighed 5.9 kilograms. The record stood for the next 12 years. After breaking the record Eddy Merckx was quoted for saying the famous sentence “The hardest ride I’ve ever done".
